Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
? Inspects locomotive before run to verify specified fuel, sand, water, and all FRA requirements. 
? Reads switching orders from designated person (Conductor). 
? Observes radio and hand signals in yard or in cab and operates locomotive in accordance with railroad rules and regulations. 
? Observes arm or lantern signal from Conductor and moves controls to move locomotive backwards or forwards to switch and couple cars; or receives starting signal from Conductor and moves control; such as throttle and air brakes to operate locomotive. 
? Reads and interprets wayside signals, track warrants and bulletins, and railroad rules and regulations to operate locomotive, following safety rules and regulations and time schedule. 
? Talks to Conductor or other yard workers via radio to give or receive switching information. 
? Confers with train dispatcher via radio to issue or receive information or instructions concerning stops, delays, or oncoming trains. 
? May assist workers to throw switches (exerting up to 100 pounds of force) or perform other activities involved when performing switching operations. 
? Turns hand brake wheel or ratchet type brake, as needed, which requires exerting 75 to 100 pounds of force. 
? Observes track to detect obstructions. 
? Inspects locomotive after run to detect damaged or defective equipment. 
? Prepares reports to explain accidents, unscheduled stops, or delays. 
? May lubricate moving parts of locomotive. 
? Supervises and coordinates the activities of train crews. 
? Receives oral or written instructions from Manager or Customer indicating which cars are to be switched. 
? Notifies engineer of switching orders and, whereby, which cars are to be moved to specified locations of yard, using radio, telephone, verbal or hand signals. Gives instructions to throw track switches and to couple and uncouple cars. 
? Maintains records, number, origin, destination, and cargo of cars switched. 
? May coordinate activities of switching crew from locomotive cab, caboose, or control tower. 
? Raises coupling lever to couple or uncouple cars. 
? Throws track switches to facilitate shunting of cars and signals Engineer to move cars, using lantern, arm signals or radio. 
? Climbs ladder to top of car, rides atop cars, and turns handwheel to set brakes or to control the speed of the car when it has been shunted. 
? Ties handbrakes. 
? Connects air hose to cars when making up trains by bending and applying up to 35 pounds of force. 
? May walk along tops of cars and peer down between them to inspect couplings, airhoses, and journal boxes. 
? May set warning signals, such as flares, flags, lanterns, or torpedoes at front of and at rear of train during emergency stops to warn oncoming trains. 
? Sits or rides in cab of locomotive to observe signals from other crew members. 
? May make minor repairs to couplings, airhoses and journal boxes, and report any equipment requiring major repairs. 
? May supervise and assist workers engaged in maintenance and repair of diesel locomotives. 
? May talk to Engineer via radio to give or receive switching information. 
? Operates single- or multiple-head spike puller to pull old spikes from tie. 
? Raises rail, using Track jack, to facilitate removal of old tie and installation of new tie. 
? Operates single- or multiple-head spike driving machine to drive spike into tie and secure rail. 
? Operates track-wrench machine to tighten or loosen bolts at joints that hold ends of rails together. 
? Operates rail saw to cut rails to specified lengths and operate Rail Drill to drill new bolt holes for rail joints. 
? Lubricate switch stands, switch plates, and rail joints with oil to enhance component operation. 
? Drives company vehicles. 
? Performs other duties as requested or required 
Requirements: 
At least 1 year experience as a Locomotive Engineer 
Must possess a valid Engineer's certificate issued by a program in compliance with 49 CFR Part 240
Job Requirements
Education/Experience: 
High school education or general education development (GED). 
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 
Knowledge of and skills in using various hand tools, including sockets, wrenches, screwdrivers, measuring tapes, etc. 
Knowledge of and skills in performing basic mechanical repairs and maintenance. 
Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, government regulations, operating and maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information. 
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and/or to apply principles of logic to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; and/or to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems. 
Ability to effectively communicate instructions, directions, processes, procedures, safety rules and regulations to co-workers, supervisors, and others in written, oral, diagrammatic and schedule form. 
Ability to make independent judgments using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base. 
Ability to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations. 
. Ability to talk to and effectively communicate with co-workers, yard personnel, switching crew, engineers, railroad officials and others in a clear, concise, courteous, efficient and professional manner. 
Ability to pass training and required testing.
